Protect Local Journalism: A Community Campaign

Protecting this community means ensuring that every resident in Western New York has access to the kind of accurate, vital and complete information that the people who live here rely on to make decisions about their lives every day.
That has always been true. That’s why for nearly a century, the journalists and staff of the Buffalo Newspaper Guild have worked on the front lines of The Buffalo News, reporting, editing and delivering information that engages us, protects the public’s interests and shines a bright light on what’s working and what isn’t. We break down complex issues and build up stories that provide a big picture that can’t be captured in a sound bite or meme.
We live and work here. We have a vested interest in ensuring our work sparks a community conversation that changes lives for the better.
During a time of fast-paced change and information overload, that mission is more critical than ever. Yet we face more challenges and barriers than ever. We face them from out-of-state corporate interests that care more about their profit margins than the public interest. We face them from power-seeking individuals who rely on public apathy and ignorance to shortchange the people who live here. And we face them from tired and overwhelmed community members who are sick of hearing “bad news,” or worse, have bought into the destructive falsehood that local news doesn’t matter anymore or can’t be trusted.
Our message to you: The Buffalo News belongs to this community. Help us keep it that way.
We in the Buffalo Newspaper Guild believe in ethical standards that uphold journalistic integrity, proper staffing levels and work conditions that allow us to continue to gather and disseminate the news. And we believe the public deserves a strong advocate that holds the powerful accountable and amplifies the voices of ordinary people who deserve to be heard.
That’s why we’ve launched the community campaign to “Protect Local Journalism.” The Buffalo News is a vital community asset, but like many other news organizations, it’s under increasing threat. We need your help, and that starts right here by learning more about our mission.
We all want the same thing: To make this region a place where people can celebrate, create change for the better, and build a stronger community. That takes commitment. Find out how you can play a role in protecting local journalism.
